Improving Indoor Air Quality with DFS Technology

Author: Dr. Roy Speiser

Room ozonation has continued to be promoted with the claim that ozone can oxidize airborne gases and particulates to simple carbon dioxide and water vapor.  A review of the literature published in the American Industry Hygiene Association Journal, indicates that ozone is neither a practical or effective means of improving indoor air quality, especially in light of its potentially serious risk to health.  When ozone is inhaled it can cause shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, headaches, nausea, eye and throat irritation.   The EPA has therefore established a maximum ozone health standard.  They have declared that a single hour of exposure to ozone is sufficient to cause negative respiratory effects.

A newer air purification technology called DFS, Disinfection Filtration System, uses a HEPA-type filter that is bathed or permeated by an electrical field.  Fungi, molds and bacteria are trapped in the filter and exposed to the energy field with a germicidal effect that inactivates microorganisms in the germ-killing zone. A 7 stage pre-filter removes odors, chemicals and large particulates

There are two major advantages of a DFS portable unit over HEPA or HEPA/UltraViolet (UV) units for germ removal.  One advantage is that the DFS technology does not degrade over time like UV lamps.  The other advantage is that there is no “shielding effect” with DFS technology.  With an UltraViolet unit, bacteria and viruses attached to small particles are not be completely exposed to the light and therefore pass through.  This problem is avoided in the DFS system because the filter is completely bathed in energy rather than requiring the particles to pass through a small UV-lit area.

Please contact CWR if you are interested in breathing germ and allergen-free air.   We design air purification systems based upon specific applications whether it be for odors, chemicals, allergens, or microorganism removal.
